Krakatoa was a super-caldera volcano (meaning it has super eruptions) located in Indonesia and erupted in 1883. The reason that I said “was” is because Krakatoa does not exist today. In its place, another volcano remains there, known as Anak Krakatau or Child of Krakatoa. Anak Krakatau is an active volcano, and it grows 5 meters every year. Along with Anak Krakatau, Indonesia has over 130 active volcanoes.
Krakatoa was located in the Sunda Strait in between the islands of Java and Sumatra. The eruption of 1883 was awful. The eruption lasted from August 26 to August 27. The explosion to the eruption was the loudest sound in recorded history. On the V.E.I. scale, (volcanic explosivity index) it was a 6 or a plinian eruption (meaning explosive eruption). The eruption was 13,000 times worse than the bombing at Hiroshima. The explosions were equivalent to 200 megatons of TNT. The volcano ejected at lease 21 km of rock, ash, and pumice. Shock waves were felt around the globe. Along with the horrible eruption there was another problem. Huge tsunamis killed even more people and destroyed towns. In the end, 165 villages and towns were completely destroyed and 132 were severely damaged. Approximately 36,417 people died in this eruption. The eruption destroyed 2/3 of the island of Krakatoa. From the eruptions that led up to 1927, Anak Krakatau was formed as the Child of Krakatoa. Krakatoa ended up blowing itself up from the eruptions.
